Power BI is a powerful BI tool, but it sadly doesn’t support Mac devices.
A couple of years ago, I was working for a company where 90% of our staff had a MacBook and loved it, but there was no way for our Data Team to work with Power BI to build out reporting. Then we turned into another tool named Holistics, a cloud-based one.
In this post, I will share my experiences implementing Power BI on Mac OS, which I hope is helpful to you if you are looking for a solution.
Disclaimer: I fell in love with Holistics at the previous company, and am now working for Holistics!
Microsoft Power BI Desktop 2.58.5103.281 download page. Download PBIDesktop.msi free. Microsoft Power BI Desktop Size: 168.7Mb. Downloaded: 3,402 times. In the report server web portal, select the Download arrow Power BI Desktop. Or go to the Power BI Report Server home page and select Advanced download options. In the Download Center page, select a language, then select Download. Depending on your computer, select. CNET Download provides free downloads for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android devices across all categories of software and apps, including security, utilities, games, video and browsers.
Since Power BI can’t run on a Mac, here are our recommendations to run Power BI on Macintosh Devices.
*Install and run Power BI on a Virtual Machine, then remote in to that Virtual Machine.
*Install and run Power BI on a PC, then use a remote viewer to control that PC.
*Use an alternative BI solution.
*Install Windows on Mac using Boot Camp
To give you a little context about Microsoft’s plan on supporting Power BI on Mac devices, they are not considering developing Power BI desktop for Mac devices anytime soon.
Download free photoshop cs3 software. You can also visit this link to keep track of their upcoming plans.
Get the Remote Desktop client. Follow these steps to get started with Remote Desktop on your Mac: Download the Microsoft Remote Desktop client from the Mac App Store. Set up your PC to accept remote connections. (If you skip this step, you can’t connect to your PC.) Add a Remote Desktop connection or a remote resource. FreeRDP: A Remote Desktop Protocol Implementation FreeRDP is a free implementation of the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), released under the Apache license. Enjoy the freedom of using your software wherever you want, the way you want it, in a world where interoperability can finally liberate your computing experience. Download Microsoft Remote Desktop for Mac to connect to remote Windows desktops. Mac OS X 10.9, Mac OS X 10.10, Mac OS X 10.8, Mac OS X 10.7. Additional Requirements None. CoRD was a Mac OS X remote desktop client for Microsoft Windows computers using the RDP protocol. It’s easy to use, fast, and free for anyone to use or modify. 2020-04-13: This project is defunct. Most people will be happy with Microsoft’s clients. Download remote desktop for mac.
You can set-up a Windows Virtual Machine on Azure, Google Cloud or AWS.
*Azure: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/services/virtual-machines/ (starting from $61/month)
*AWS: https://aws.amazon.com/getting-started/tutorials/launch-windows-vm/
Then you install and run Power BI on that Virtual Machine.
Finally, install Microsoft Remote Desktop for Mac on each device to give your team access to that VM.
Hidden object games no download for mac. There are a couple of disadvantages to this approach, however:
*It’s difficult to control permission access and version history.
*You can only have one person working on a machine at a time, since Power BI for desktop is not a collaborative tool.
It’s a little bit the same with the first method, however, this time, you use a physical machine.
You set-up a Windows PC, install and run Power BI on that PC.
Install TeamViewer, AnyDesk, or MS Remote Desktop to give people access to that PC and use Power BI from their Macs.
Cons: same with the first method, and you have to maintain a physical PC.
Power BI is powerful — it helps your team consolidate data and build dashboards and reports with a powerful data modeling layer. It’s not easy to find a great tool in the market to replace Power BI, but here are two alternative solutions I recommend which is 100% cloud-based, can replicate its functionalities, and in some cases do even more.1. Holistics
Holistics is a powerful full-stack data platform that allows companies to set up an end-to-end, reusable, and scalable data analytics stack with minimal engineering resources.
It not only gives data analysts a powerful SQL-based data modeling approach, but it also helps them build a data warehouse and automate reporting. Holistics is also designed to empowers non-technical users to get insights with a strong self-service analytics offering.
Holistics vs Power BI: https://www.holistics.io/compare/holistics-vs-powerbi/2. Looker + StitchData
Looker is a business intelligence and big data analytics platform that helps you explore, analyze and share real-time business analytics easily.
Looker is also a powerful server-based Data Modeling BI tool, however, they don’t support Data Transforms and Data Imports, so you will need another tool for that called StitchData. Together, you get all the power of Power BI with none of the Windows lock-in.
Boot Camp is a utility that helps you install Microsoft Windows 10 on your Mac, then switch between macOS and Windows when restarting your Mac.
You can learn more about how to use it here
I like Power BI’s product, but it is difficult to keep using Power BI given that the tool is built exclusively for the Windows Desktop. Instead of allowing your data team to work collaboratively, your data pipeline will depend on Windows. This is difficult and restrictive if your organization works primarily on Mac.
The upshot here is that if you do not use a Microsoft-stack at your organization, a 100% cloud-based solution would be a better fit for your needs.-->
The Power BI Developer in a Day video-based course empowers you as an app developer with the technical knowledge required to embed Power BI content. It comprises 3 hours 20 minutes of viewable content—available on demand, and is free of charge. There’s also a self-study kit that you can download and use to complete a series of five hands-on labs.
The course was designed specifically for experienced app developers. So, it’s an advantage if you have development experience with:

You can download and set up a self-study kit, which consists of the presentation content and five hands-on labs. For more information, watch the Self-study Kit video.Download Power Bi Desktop For Mac
To complete the labs, you’ll need a Windows PC (Windows 7, or later) and the following software installed:
*The latest version of Power BI Desktop.
*Visual Studio 2015, or later. We recommend Visual Studio 2019. You can use Community edition, which is free and suited for learning scenarios. It must have the ASP.NET and web development workload installed.
*A web browser supported by Power BI. We recommend Microsoft Edge.
Follow these steps to get set up:
*Use this link to download the self-study kit (.zip) locally to your PC.
*Open the file properties, and then check ’unblock’ (Windows may flag the file as potentially untrusted).
*Extract the file contents to a folder in your file system. We recommend you create a folder that will be easy to find, perhaps naming it Training. The lab documents will refer to this location as <CourseFolder>.
Once extracted, you’ll have the PowerBIDevIAD folder, and within it you’ll find the following folders:
*Lab01A (and all other lab folders). The lab folders contain the lab document and lab resources, which may include assets and solution files.
*MySolution: This folder stores your solution files. The lab instructions will direct you when to use it.
*Presentation: This folder contains the course presentation file, which is available as a PDF document.Get started with the kit
We recommend you watch the online course first. You can refer back to the presentation theory by opening the <CourseFolder>PowerBIDevIADPresentationPowerBIDevIAD_Presentation.pdf file. The presentation includes five lab slides, which indicate when it’s time to put the theory to practice. It also includes many resource links to help you find related content.
When you’re ready to commence the first lab, open the <CourseFolder>PowerBIDevIADLab01APowerBIDevIAD_Lab01A.pdf file. This document guides you to sign in to the Power BI service and prepare a Power BI report.
Note
You’re responsible for having your own Power BI account. If you don’t already have one, see Sign up for Power BI as an individual.
Your account must have a Power BI Pro license, or you can still accept a Power BI Pro Trial license—an offer that can only be accepted once. Also, your account must not have depleted the reserve of free embed tokens, available with the Power BI Pro license.
Also, you must be OK to have your password stored in cleartext in the lab solution. Storing sensitive information is never a recommended practice—it’s done to simplify the lab. If you want to encrypt your password, you’ll need to implement the logic yourself.
Consider creating a Power BI account for exclusive use in the labs. You can create a free account with a public domain like https://outlook.live.com, and then using it to sign in to Power BI and accept the Power BI Pro Trial license.Instructor kit
Use this link to download the instructor kit (.zip) locally to your PC. You’ll find classroom setup notes in slide one of the PowerPoint slide deck.Next steps
